More often than not, have I simply secured Reikland and gone on a Lustria expedition with the Empire. There is literally nothing that keeps you in your start location. You'll spend like 80% fighting in your own little corner of the world, until you snowball into a mega-empire and just play cleanup for like the remaining three quarters. The real downside of huge maps is that interaction between factions grows increasingly more difficult, irrelevant and late.
